Production Versus Custom Home Builders: What’s the Difference?

Custom built homes can be completed by a production builder or a custom home builder. Both are great options, but depending on how much input you would like to have in the design process, one type of builder might be better for you than the other. It is important to understand the difference between the two types of construction.

First, a production home builder provides you with a library of preselected floor plans to choose from. The home will be built in a specified neighborhood and you will have limited choices to select from when designing the home. One benefit of this type of construction is that the land and house are packaged together into a single purchase. Another benefit is that a production build can be affordable for even a first-time homebuyer.

A custom home builder allows you to take complete control of the design process, with professional assistance. There are endless decisions that you will need to make, but every aspect of the home is customized to your personal preferences. You can design the layout, pick the tile and choose the material for the exterior. However, all the decisions that need to be made for custom built homes can be overwhelming. One way to help manage this is to limit your selection options by determining your budget and strictly staying within those boundaries. Another thing to consider for a custom-built home is that you must supply the land. This allows you to build your dream home in your dream location.

There are pros and cons to both types of home builders. Ultimately you need to decide what aspect of custom built homes is most important to you. Do you want to be able to pick every little detail of the home? Do you want the land to be included with the build of the house? Once you decide what is best for you, then you can move forward with the construction of your new house.
