Naturally, sand is not the best to build a foundation on, but it’s not impossible. The main threats are erosion and tides. The other half of the story is the house itself. Even if the foundation is resistant, sandstorms could still damage siding and roofing, so sturdier materials are necessary. Tropical storms and hurricanes could do far worse damage with heavy rainfall and powerful winds; consider an aerodynamic design that the wind can break on more safely.

With these in mind, you can dedicate your design towards taking advantage of the locale. On the beachfront, you want to focus on outdoor space with patios, porches, observation decks, and other extensions. Not only are these lovely on the beach, but they functionally add more floor space for less. The indoor spaces should feel open and flow naturally into the outside, but should still be accommodating for when you want a break from the sun. Don’t forget guest rooms, either.

Despite the challenges in designing and building, beach house construction can be rewarding if the luxury is available to you. The romance of living within eyesight of the ocean is undeniable, and the unique design options offered create a fantastic getaway.
